"Sardinia is not Italy", or is it?

"Sardinia is not Italy" the graffiti read as we pedaled along, but actually it is. Sardinia has a long history that includes influence and conquest from many different cultures and empires, but it did join the Italian kingdom as part of the Italian war of independence in 1848. More recently it became an autonomous member of The Italian Republic in 1948. Still the 2nd largest island in the Mediterranean Sea (after Sicily and before Cypress) asserts it's independent spirit and feels quite different than the Italian peninsula.

It all started with a train, then came a ferry, a bus, and finally a ride all in the same 24 hours. The ferry is a 7 hour ride from 10:30 pm - 6 am. A trip in itself and on our return a little less anticipation will make it a little smoother. We rode the last 40 km to a nice campground in Alghero on the north-western coast of Sardinia and ended up staying for two days. We took a day ride north to Capo Cacia to visit the Grotto di Nettuna, a famous cave that was discovered in the 1500's with 650 steps leading down the sea cliff to the entrance. A lot of tourists take a boat to avoid the steps and enjoy a cruise, Darryl was much happier to ride as the winds were up and the little boat would have surely made him feel ill. The tour guide spoke four different languages! The whole area is bellisimo! Finally we were riding in warm sunny weather, which led to sunburns the next day on our ride south to Bosa. This day was really amazing and reminded us of the Big Sir coast of California, but with far less traffic and quite a bit more climbing!

We learned that the campground was closed, so settled into a nice hostel in nearby Bosa Marina. It was warm enough that we almost went for a swim, but instead enjoyed walking along the beach. We have met a few other travelers along the way, Ahmad from Lebanon is studying engineering in Germany and picked up a last minute flight to Alghero for 20€! We also met another couple of cicl-tourists from Switzerland who were staying at the hostel in Bosa. Today we turn inland to the mountains which we are feeling a bit anxious about as the route looks tough.
